'double exposure' (private pressing), play me (vinyl album)

    album track listing includes:

  • no man is an island - faith's last doubt (7.15)
'Double Exposure' was a compilation album assembled by Steven Wilson in 1986 to promote various musical projects, including his own. The album had a short pressing run and was soon deleted. It was a follow up to the similar 'Exposure' compilation. Other contributing artists included Anthony Phillips, Haze, Geoff Mann, Mazlyn Jones and Tim's pre-No-Man band Plenty.

Faith's Last Doubt was one of the first two tracks Steven and Tim recorded together, and can be considered one of the first true No-Man songs (although the band was still called No Man Is An Island at that stage). It's a dark and moody ballad showing strong influences of Japan and Peter Hamill (fretless bass and dramatic, stylised vocal) with a full-blooded rock guitar solo and African slot-drum loop - the polar opposite of the other track recorded in the same session (Screaming Head Eternal).

Several of Steven's instrumental contributions were listed under various ridiculous pseudonyms; as was that of Nigel Childs (lead guitarist from '80s AOR band Pride Of Passion).

musicians:

lyrics:

faith's last doubt

like waves they move,
in doubt they move,
towards a fading light,
towards a fading light.
they move, in time
they may shed faith's last doubt,
and bathe in blinding light,
and in the blazing light
they'll touch.

chorus 1:

but she can't speak of what she feels
within her hopeless heart,
and he can't reach her private pain
or break the lies they share,

break the lies.

in time they may
shed faith's last doubt,
and bathe in blinding light,
and in the blazing light
they'll touch.

chorus 2:

and she can't speak of what she feels
within her hopeless heart,
and he can't reach her private pain
or break the lies they share,
or break the lies they share,
or break the lies they share,
break the lies.

towards a fading light,
towards a fading light,
they move.

chorus 1 (repeat)

reviews:

"At the time of the first 'Exposure' LP it all sounded quite chaotic, but now the composing of Steven Wilson is looking more musically balanced, with a lot of controlled computer percussion and smart guitar playing. I'm very curious to hear their forthcoming LP 'Precious Memories', as No-Man is heading in the direction of Japan, partly because of the remarkable voice of the guest singer Tim Bowness. Very nice!"
