tim bowness/samuel smiles

Tim was the singer in Samuel Smiles, an "ambient folk" band active during the 1990s. The other core members were Michael Bearpark (guitars) and Peter Chilvers (piano, bass guitar, programming), joined at various times by Myke Clifford (saxophones, flute, percussion) or Marianne De Chastelaine (cello).
Samuel Smiles balanced intimate singer-songwriter material suggesting both the 1970s (John Martyn, Leonard Cohen, John Cale, Nick Drake) and the 1990s (Mark Eitzel, Nick Cave), and fused it with jazz-tinged, textural musical excursions inspired by the likes of David Bowie, Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. Prone to regular internal tensions, the band ground to a halt in the early 2000s. All of the members retained their personal and professional friendships, and continue to play together in different projects (notably the Tim Bowness/Peter Chilvers duo). |
