During the mid-1990s, Tim collaborated with Richard Barbieri (best known at the time as the keyboard player for Japan, Rain Tree Crow, but now better known for his work with Porcupine Tree). Building on their enjoyable working relationship in the No-Man touring band of 1992, Richard and Tim wrote a series of "ambient torch songs" which were released on the ‘Flame’ album in 1994.
Extending the ideas of Japan's 'Tin Drum' and the quieter moments of the first two No-Man albums, ‘Flame’ blended Tim's lustrous vocals with Richard's uniquely textured approach to synthesizer arrangements. It also featured guest performances by Danny Thompson, Michael Bearpark, Richard’s former Japan/Rain Tree crow bandmates (Steve Jansen, Mick Karn) and members of Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson, Chris Maitland and Gavin Harrison). This is Tim and Richard’s only collaboration to date ouside No-Man. |
