Steve, Richard and Mick first tasted fame as members of the art-rock band Japan, which split up at the height of its powers in 1983. The band subsequently reconvened in 1989 under the name of Rain Tree Crow for a single, eponymous album and split up the following year.
By that time, however, all three musicians had established themselves as highly original voices on their chosen instruments, prompting No-Man to hire them in 1992 to complete the touring band. The trio also contributed to No-Man recording sessions (most notably for the songs Sweetheart Raw and the long-form instrumental Heaven Taste).
Steve later played drums and percussion on the 'Returning Jesus' album, and Richard contributed sampled sound to 'Wild Opera'.
Following the 1992 No-Man tour, the trio went on to work together as Jansen Barbieri Karn.
Much of their subsequent output as a trio and on various other projects has been released on
Medium Productions Ltd.
As session musicians and collaborators, Steve, Richard and Mick have contributed to records and tours by many other artists including David Torn, Alice, Mandalay, PolyTown, Anja Garbarek, The Bays and Kate Bush.
Richard Barbieri collaborated with Tim on a duo album - 'Flame' - in 1994. He joined Steven in Porcupine Tree in 1993 and has played keyboards and synthesizers for the band ever since.
